By Sarah CzajaThe Associated PressWASHINGTON — In the wake of the mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, gay and lesbian couples and their supporters are calling on President Barack Obama to create a special category for bath towels.
They are asking for a new category, “baths with a lot of water and water-resistant” towels, to be made available to retailers to sell for $29.99.
The president could also ask Congress to establish a special legislative committee to look at how to create an equivalent category for the towels in the United States.
The idea is to give retailers an easier time of it.
But a spokeswoman for the White House said the president’s team has been working on the issue since the beginning of the summer.
The bath towels are just the latest in a long line of products that have been deemed to be “essential” by the government.
There are other categories such as “snow” towels that the government deems essential for outdoor use, and other categories that require a special labeling.
The White House has been looking at the issue for years.
In 2010, the president set up a task force that included the heads of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Department of Homeland Security, the Food and Drug Administration and the Department the Treasury Department.
